Homeworld’81 firmly established Milton Keynes as a leader in innovative, sustainable housing design. Now, 40 years later, Saxon Court, which is at the heart of a new re-development plan, is set to showcase a unique exhibition - Hopeworld ’21.
From Friday 2nd July until 16th July, the Saxon Court atrium will provide a platform for the exhibition, which will incorporate a series of exhibits created by undergraduate architecture students. Hopeworld ’21 celebrates the 40th anniversary of the original housing exhibition, while imagining the next generation of homes.
Back in 1981, the environmentally conscious housing exhibition, which was commissioned by Milton Keynes Development Corporation, was ground-breaking and paved the way for a new era of sustainable living. Students from Nottingham University have studied the legacy of this innovative exhibition and created their own interpretation with Hopeworld ’21 as part of the anniversary celebrations organised by Living Archive MK, Pooleyville and MK Council.
“Milton Keynes was one of the last and most ambitious of the post-war New Towns,” comments Alison Davies, Unit 5A Head of Nottingham University’s Department of Architecture and Built Environment. “The students have, within their exhibit, acknowledged Milton Keynes' unique urban environment, its important legacy of energy projects, and its ambitions for future sustainability.”
First Base, the mixed-use development company behind the planned new era for Saxon Court, together with investors Patron Capital, acquired the former council building in October 2020.
In line with the future living exhibition, plans for the redevelopment of the iconic site include the creation of over 287 apartments for rent. The unique, innovative planned design of these homes will set a new benchmark in future living for the region, while supporting Milton Keynes’ post-Covid economic recovery and growth.
